Natural Selection Alone Can Explain Eusociality, Scientists Say:

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2010) — Scientists at Harvard University have sketched a new map of the "evolutionary labyrinth" species must traverse to reach eusociality, the rare but spectacularly successful social structure where individuals cooperate to raise offspring…

Eusociality is rare, but important in evolutionary biology because the few species that adhere to it — including social insects and, to an extent, humans — rank among the planet's most dominant. The biomass of ants alone composes more than half that of all insects, exceeding that of all terrestrial nonhuman vertebrates combined. Humans, who are more loosely eusocial, dominate land vertebrates.

"Eusociality has arisen independently some 10 to 20 times in the course of evolution," says Tarnita, a junior fellow in Harvard's Society of Fellows. "Our model shows that it is difficult to get eusociality in the first place, but that it is very stable once it is established. A colony behaves like a 'superorganism,' reproducing the genome of the queen and the sperm she has stored."

Why Parents Hate Parenting | NY Magazine
http://nymag.com/news/features/67024/

"They're a huge source of joy, but they turn every other source of joy to shit."

As a rule, most studies show that mothers are less happy than fathers, that single parents are less happy still, that babies and toddlers are the hardest, and that each successive child produces diminishing returns.
Psychological studies have been consistently bleak in their assessment of the happiness derived from being a parent: Negligible to negative. So why then, asks the New York Magazine, do we still instinctively feel repulsed by the idea that having children is anything but a joyous and noble decision?

Some of the startling findings outlined here include the paradox that over the past few decades, as parents have begun devoting more time to their children, they are increasingly feeling as though they're not doing enough. Contributing to this, of course, is the common idea in more prosperous societies of parenting as a competitive hobby, where each child can be perfected if only the right rules are followed.

Luckily, the author surmises that stress decreases when social welfare policies such as paid parental leave are introduced. More importantly, measures of satisfaction - as opposed to happiness - provide a more familiar indication of why people continue to choose parenting. As one psychologist sums up: "Should you value moment-to-moment happiness more than retrospective evaluations of your life?"
